“This state-of-the-art building will be the catalyst for health sciences students as they learn and develop into the next generation of health care professionals. In the past, we’ve had to turn away qualified applicants because our facilities could not accommodate larger class sizes. This new facility will provide an opportunity to increase enrollment and produce health care professionals in many of the state’s high-need areas.”

Sheila K. Gestring
President, University of South Dakota

A highly anticipated addition to the University of South Dakota’s campus is the new hub for hands-on education, collaboration, and research for the University of South Dakota’s health professional disciplines.

Faculty and staff are enjoying new office spaces while students are learning in state-of-the-art simulation rooms and lab settings. The new addition has enabled the University to increase enrollment by more than 50% in multiple programs, including dental hygiene, nursing, and social work, with an objective of placing healthcare professionals in critical high-need South Dakota communities.

Gage Brothers manufactured 3,500 square feet of smooth gray shear precast concrete wall panels and 15,413 square feet of architectural precast concrete wall panels for the project. For the structure to match the existing campus structures, the architectural precast concrete wall panels were completed with a sandblast finish and an Endicott thin brick.

Work on the $22.5 million, three-story, 45,000-square-foot addition began in April 2021. The facility opened to students in September 2022.
