The Borland Center for Music and Theatre at Concordia University, Nebraska, stands as a true testament to creative design and expert craftsmanship. This $17.5 million project not only enhances the university’s performing arts facilities but also showcases what can be achieved through collaboration and a commitment to excellence.

At the heart of the project were 93 custom precast panels that formed the building’s striking exterior. Panels were crafted with precision, using white cement combined with Gilmore City Limestone aggregates and finished with a sandblast texture. The design called for vertically stacked panels, which added both depth and dimension to the facade, making it a standout feature of the Borland Center.

These panels weren’t just any standard pieces—they were designed with complex angles that required a level of precision only skilled form builders could provide. Our team at Gage Brothers took on the challenge head-on, crafting each unique form in-house. The intricate angles and varying dimensions meant our form builders had to bring their A-game daily. Each panel had to be perfect, not just for aesthetic reasons, but to ensure they fit together seamlessly when assembled on-site.

As the project progressed, the importance of collaboration became increasingly evident. Gage Brothers worked closely with the architects and contractors, ensuring that every detail of the precast panels met the project’s specifications. This partnership was essential in bringing the architectural vision to life, allowing the Borland Center to evolve from a series of sketches into a tangible and impactful space. The end result is a facade that’s as functional as it is visually stunning—a true reflection of the artistry and skill that went into its creation.

The Borland Center for Music and Theatre is more than just a physical space; it is a hub of creativity and innovation. With its enhanced ensemble practice facilities, teaching studios, and a professional recording studio, the center provides a dynamic environment where students can explore, create, and refine their craft. The inclusion of a 100-seat Black Box theatre and a recital hall equipped with advanced acoustic technologies further amplifies the center’s role as a premier destination for performing arts education.
